about

‘sensational, uplifting, spine chilling, dazzling, musically surprising, effortlessly grandiose, soulful, howling, life lessons rearranged, groovy, hallelujah music, on a rocket piloted by nina simone‘

Julitha Ryan’s grand debut album The Lucky Girl features a big voice – her own – backed by an all-star cast of Melbourne’s most intuitive musicians presenting a dramatic and idiosyncratic suite of 12 songs specifically designed to be heard from start to finish. Best known as the keyboard player in Melbourne instrumental band Silver Ray, Julitha pulls out all the stops for The Lucky Girl, playing half a dozen instruments on the record.

Julitha has recorded and performed with The Dead Salesmen and the Hope Addicts, Charlie Marshall, Hugo Race and Mick Harvey. Most notably Silver Ray released 4 albums to wide acclaim during the 2000’s, and toured the UK supporting Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in the middle of that decade. She has also played the role of string and vocal arranger on multiple albums.

‘The Lucky Girl’ was written, arranged and produced by Ryan, and recorded and mixed by Andrew ‘Idge’ Hehir at Soundpark Studios, Northcote, Australia and mastered by Andy Stewart @ The Mill, Woolamai Australia.

The Lucky Girl is available now on VINYL, CD & Digital Download through julitharyan.com

Julitha is currently performing with a full 9-piece band including brass and string section and 5 backing vocalists.

Track Name: The Preacher
I stand by the side of the road
The war is done and dusted and there is no water
And I cannot carry myself any further
And I cannot stay any longer
And I won’t dream and I won’t
Sit beside this river ever again
My life is not for the faint of heart not for the small-minded
Not for the weak-willed nor the mean spirited
Nor the good-time drifters
And I’m not here for your movers and shakers
I’ll do it on my own
Yes my heart’s on the line for a dollar
Maybe a lobster if I’m lucky
Plucky Girl
Or just a woman who feels vindicated by a
Turn of events she’d already anticipated
Plucky girl – lucky girl – plucky girl.
Track Name: Stars In The Sky
Keep your eyes on the road, you’ve never seen it before
Don’t go too fast, don’t go too slow
The direction is hazy but the feeling’s alright
Your life and mine aimed at this moment, this moment in time
Stars in the Sky
Stars in my eyes
Stars in the sky never lie
Playing like you’re starlight, talking like it’s midnight,
Speeding through the dark night
Playing like you’re starlight, talking like it’s midnight,
And the show is tonight…
It’s not fair to be made for these things
How fast time flies we used to sing
Out of time, and out of the line, drive on, drive by,
Dark moon in the sky…
Drink it in – the road ahead! – Drink it in!
Stars in the sky
Stars in my eyes
Stars in the sky never lie, no they don’t
Stars in the sky
Trucks passing by!
Stars in my eyes never lie.
Track Name: Amsterdam Spring
There is a soft boat, there is a soft boat,
And it glides between my feet
As I rest in the sun at a table in the street
Amsterdam
My soul is still seared
My recovery incomplete
But I’m no longer hurrying
I no longer care! I no longer see you everywhere!
Amsterdam
Amsterdam
The beauty of girls doesn’t break me anymore
I am what I am and not a breath more
The ground is crack’d from east to west
The water cruises, the boats shimmy
The bells ring out their summer beauty
This is what peace feels like
Amsterdam
Track Name: It's Nearly Xmas Again
Instrumental
Track Name: O'Brother
O Brother what have you done?
O Brother what you have done?
You’re so cruel
O Brother I thought you knew
O Brother I’ll never be as cool as you
You’ve had your say– now stay away…..
Your house a beacon in the night
I cannot see the light
I can go neither left nor right
I stay where I’m blown
We’re beaten and thrown, you’re not alone
Beaten and thrown, you’re not alone
The idea of you will have to do for now
The idea of you will have to be enough for now
O Brother!
Track Name: Whirlpool
I won’t be caught in a whirlpool
No mael, no maelstrom for me
But I lost sight of the first rule
Open your eyes and see
In a whirlpool
I’ll do what I can
To get
To get free
I won’t be, I won’t be, I won’t be
I won’t be caught in a whirlpool
Like a movie as it unspools
I won’t be, won’t be caught
In a whirlpool!
Track Name: Run Out The Door
Run out the door fly away but I’ll do anything you say
I’ll run out the door, I’ll get away cos you do everything I say!
Even my old friends tell me it’s wrong
Hah! She’s life, she’ll sing for a song
Run out the door come out and play
Much too dangerous to stay
You’ve seen me before, every day, like I’ve never been away
I can’t believe I’ve been so weak
You are what you seek!
I hear you
Run out the door fly away, so much harder when you stay
Even my old friends think I’m strong but I’m strung along
Run out the door go out and play – I don’t want you anyway!!
Run out the door – It’s open you see – Run out the door!
Track Name: You'll Never Catch Me
You’ll never catch me when I’m falling down
You’ll never see – the way I lie to myself.
You’ll never drive me when I’ve lost my key
You wouldn’t know - the way I drive myself.
You’ll have to forgive my contrary nature
One day it’s beautiful
Next day I hate ya
Track Name: I'm Waiting, Again
Instrumental
Track Name: The Poem
When we become as one
We may survive love’s labour done
And then alone left behind to pick the bones
Of the living and the dead, easily led, easily bled.
The curtain opens, but it rains
And Laughter pauses pain
Of the mountains we’ve yet to climb
In your fading light at the dawn of time
A storm approaches of looking forward, looking back
We paling images, forever looking back
We cut the cord and yet the poet speaks his mind
And narcissistically intones the end
The end of all time, all my time
At labour’s end, will freedom be your friend
Or will it bring you strife?
Or few sweet raindrops will bring your heart to life?
Will bring your heart to life?
Wonderful life, beautiful life.
Track Name: Azures
And it was so easy all I had to do was die
And it was so easy all I had to do was die
You send me down this river
God knows where or who knows why
I waited for you for hours, down by the seaside
I waited for you for hours and hours down by the ocean side
You never even explained
But somebody told me she cried
You always ran to her when there was trouble
And it didn’t matter who you left behind
You always ran to her when there was trouble
And it didn’t matter who the hell you left behind
Well all of my senses are gone, but
Boy, I know I was blind.
And it was so easy all I had to do was die
Yes it was so easy all I had to do was die
And so, on a turbulent sea I died
And now I see, and now I see
Track Name: Stitch In Time
You are all I can see
On this madding earth
And the sun's on my face love
At least one stitch in place love
And no time to waste love
